American golf architecture has proceeded through several different and distinct phases. Ideas once popular were supplanted by “new” ideas, which were then, themselves, amended in later years. The evolving American society, economy, government and environment provided additional impetuses for change. This presentation will attempt to provide a framework for understanding golf architecture since its inception.
