The Philadelphia School

What was the “Philadelphia School of Golf Architecture”? Where was their classroom? Who were their professors? What brought together some of the most storied names in the golden age of golf architecture: Hugh Wilson, George Crump, William Fownes, George Thomas, AW Tillinghast and William Flynn? Responsible for Merion, Pine Valley and so many other top golf courses, we owe so much to this school. We will seek to uncover the origins of the school and characterize their genius.
