Golf in the US changed in 1994 with the opening of Coore & Crenshaw’s Sand Hills in Mullen, Nebraska. Following an era when golf courses were built around “signature holes” to sell real estate developments, Bill and Ben created a course that seems like it already existed in the sandy dunes of Nebraska. The unveiling of Sand Hills led to a renaissance of golf course architecture most exemplified by their future designs as well as those of Tom Doak, Gil Hanse, David McLay Kidd and others. This presentation will seek to unearth what the new minimalism is really about, contrast their designs to those of their predecessors and coalesce the themes of this movement.
